A smooth MPEC approach for uncovering crop rotation effects
(Presented at the Congress of the European Association of Agricultural Economics held in Rennes, August 29 - Sepember 1 2023) With Fabienne Féménia, Alain Carpentier and Alexandre Gohin
We propose a smooth Mathematical Programming with Equilibrium constraints (MPEC) approach to estimate the effects of previous crops on yield and input uses of current crop when crop sequence acreages are not observed in farm data. The economic assumption for identifying the effects of interest is the usual rationality assumption. We test the finite sample properties of the proposed estimator and it exhibits good statistical properties. The approach is then tested on farm data, but yields less convaincing results. On the economics of crop rotation diversification: pre crop effects, cropping system effects and accounting for opportunity costs
With Alain Carpentier and Rémy Ballot
We present a simple approach for analyzing the economic value of crop rotation diversification, relying on basic economic calculus and data describing the technical performances of crop rotation with various degree of diversity in comparable production conditions. We show that the economic value of a diversification crop can be usefully decomposed into the sum of three components: the opportunity value of producing the diversification crop, the value of the pre crop effects and that of the cropping system effects implied by the insertion of the diversification crop in the rotation. The approach is illustrated by means of an application considering the insertion of pea in a cereal-based rotation, a topic of special interest in the EU.Crop diversification in the agricultural production economics literature
